ELECTRICAL
For all your common issues like replacing lamps, plugs, light fittings, to more complex tasks like rewiring an entire building, wiring a new building or designing an electrical panel or system for a specific need, we have done it before! And we’ll do it again. Most frequently asked questions we encounter are energy saving, generator or backup power systems. We can assist in reducing your monthly electricity bill by making minor, to major changes. We also source our materials from various wholesalers and distributors, and can offer a wide variety of products that will suit your pocket and still get the job done. Backup power is a more frequently occurring thing in South Africa and we’re staying ahead of the game. Quotations are free (within reason and radius from our offices), and callouts are specific to the distance, travelling time and time of day/night. All equipment used is SABS approved unless otherwise specified eg. certain light fittings, which usually carry an international specification. We are registered and can issue certificates of compliance for companies and residential properties.
Safety Tips with your electrical installation
- Try to distribute loads. Don’t “over use” a multi plug, this may cause the unit to start melting and catch fire.
- Test your earth leakage device monthly. Somewhere one of the circuit breakers in the Distribution board says something like Earth leakage device, or Residual current device, and written on them: “Push monthly or push to trip” If you push the button and nothing happens, call an electrician immediately!
- Always use accredited electricians. The SANS 10142 standard has in the region of 350 pages. An installation electrician is expected to know them all, or know where to find them. The guy on the street doesn’t. Whatever you do now, will affect the cost of a certificate of compliance once a property gets sold maybe, many years later, and possibly hurting or killing someone.
- If you want to do some diy, PLEASE ask an electrician or an electrical wholesaler for some advice. We cannot stop you from attempting electrical work yourself, but you can get some good sound advice. The salesman by the local large retailer sitting in the electrical isle is NOT good, sound advice.
- Electrical work done incorrectly will most likely result in either a fire, or electrocution. Usually it affects more than one person, not just you, possibly your entire family. An installation electrician is a person who completed an apprenticeship or learnership usually around 2.5 – 3 years, completed an “installation rules” subject, wiremans licence subject, and certain tertiary subjects. He then needed to finish a certain period of “on the job” work before becoming an installation electrician. Finally, he must register with the DOL every 1-3 years as an installation electrician. A guy who has a certificate after a few months is not an electrician, he is also not an installation electrician.
